A Not-For-Profit Leadership and Resource Center
and Community Meeting / Training Facility
For the past eight years at the Step One Community Center:
- Today, 30 self-help groups per week utilize the center at no cost. This represents approximately 500 people per week who gather here for these meetings.
- 17 community based organizations such as Toastmasters, Marine Corp League, AARP, Hospice of the Pines and 13 others hold their training and service meetings for free at the center once per week.
- Five not-for-profit agencies including United Way and Stepping Stones Agencies, call the Step One Center home for their day to day operations in serving our communities.
- Eight other not-for-profit agencies meet regularly at the Step One Center to meet with clients, hold board meetings, have strategic planning meetings, or staff training.
- Approximately 14 people walk into the center every day to access the “Wall of Resources” that holds over 100 brochures and informational pieces divided by topic on resources and services available in our community.
- Five social clubs and civic organizations meet regularly in our Step One Coffee House.
- Step One Center hosts a minimum of 6 trainings per year to human services workers on topics such as ethics, cultural diversity, caretaking v.s. caregiving, community advocacy classes. 66 people have attended these trainings in the last 12 months.
Today: Need to Grow
Because the use of the Step One Community Center is free to local agencies and organizations that are offering their services to the community for free, we receive about 3 requests per day to schedule space. We turn away the majority of those requests per day because the space is booked.
This is the new home of:
- Stepping Stones Thrift Clothing Outlet
- Steps for Success - a free, onsite, career clothing and job skill training assistance project
- Stepping Stones Agencies’ Administrative Office
- Step One Coffee House, with expanded café menu
- Larger 12 Step Recovery Bookstore and Gift Shop
- 4 meeting and conference facilities (4,500 sq ft)
- Multi-tenant, not-for-profit office space (3,000 sq ft) for any not-for-profit service agency who would like to be part of this amazing collaboration and operate out of the center.
Our 2012 training schedule for not-for-profit staff and volunteers will expand from four Certified Community Advocate classes per year to 24 classes per year on topics like:
- Excellent Customer Service
- Not-for-Profit Ethics
- How to design a company policy/operations manual
